Challenges for first responders will begin immediately after the Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m. Funds raised will be used for cash awards for the competing departments and will go toward a scholarship fund for a current Knox County first responder pursuing higher education or additional training. The public is encouraged to show support for first responders by attending the event.

Rastin Challenge badgeMedals and NEW INCREASED CASH PRIZE AMOUNTS prizes will be awarded for first ($750), second ($500) and third place ($250). Checks will be made to your department association. PLUS, over $3,000 worth of individual prizes!

  • One-mile fun run led by Get Healthy Knox Coalition (8 a.m. registration; 8:30 race time)
  • Various safety service-related displays will be available during the event.
  • Youth challenges, led by the YMCA, will be held in between challenges and will include the terrace climb, firefighter relay, and obstacle course.
  • FREE breakfast for first responders from Tim Horton's.
  • Lunch will be available for purchase (first responders receive a $10 food voucher).

Firefighter Stair Climb

14196092 1157967514242752 1652787818495540131 oThis competition will be comprised of a relay team in which all members will climb 140 feet on the Rastin Observation Tower. One at a time, each member will tackle 224 steps in a race to the top. This is a timed event and the team with the fastest time wins. Individual and department awards and prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4-person teams can be made up of any gender combination and must be an active career, part-time or volunteer firefighter.

Uniform of the day: Full turnout gear with SCBA harness/bottle. SCBA bottle must be greater than 4400 PSI. Firefighters will not be breathing air from bottle so a face-piece is not needed. Only standard department issued structural fire fighting PPE to include SCBA  can be used in the competitions. No light weight competition gear can be used. Gear will be inspected prior to the start of the event.

Note: All entries receive a free T-shirt.

$50 entry fee required. Please note that if your team registers for more than one challenge, the cost of your second challenge is just $25.

Firefighter Combat Challenge

Tasks include high-rise climb, forcible entry, hose advancement and victim rescue. This is a timed event. Each member will complete a task. It will be your responsibility to select who will do what. Individual and department awards and prizes will be awarded for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4-person teams can be made up of any gender combination and must be an active career, part-time or volunteer firefighter.

Tactical Obstacle Course

This event is to showcase your athletic ability. It is geared toward tactical teams but not limited to them. This is a team event, your 2 or 4-person team will be required to maneuver through, over, under or around several obstacles. Teamwork will be needed on multiple obstacles. This is a timed event and the fastest time wins. No firearms or tactical vests needed. Medals & cash prizes ($750.00 for first place in the 4-person team) will be awarded for first, second, and third. Checks will be made to your department association or an organization of your choosing. Plus over $1,500.00 in individual prizes! Everyone wins!

Team: 4 sworn law enforcement officers
Our preference is for 4-person teams, but we will accept 2-person teams. Be aware that teams may be combined depending on number of registrants the day of the event.

Uniform of the day: BDU/Tactical Pants, BDU/Tactical Blouse or matching T-shirts
acceptable, and boots (no tennis shoes)

K9 Officer main

This is a timed event to showcase narcotics detection, K-9 and handler agility. Each K-9 team (handler and dog) will be required to detect narcotics and then run a short agility course. The fastest time wins. Medals & cash prizes ($750.00 for first place) will be awarded for first, second, and third. Checks will be made to your department association or an organization of your choosing. PLUS over $1,500.00 worth of individual prizes! See sample scoring sheet (pdf).

Uniform of the day and equipment: Department issued uniform, certified canine, proper K-9 equipment and a marked K-9 cruiser.

 Ariel-Foundation Park, located in Mount Vernon, Ohio, is a 250-acre civic park that offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages.

Visiting Hours

Ariel-Foundation Park is officially open April 1 through November 15. Some areas of the park are accessible to pedestrians year-round. Daily hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are no admissions or parking fees. The Rastin Observation Tower, park museum, picnic pavillions, trails and other park features are free and open to the public. The Rastin Observation Tower is open during winter months, as long as weather allows.
