Challenges for first responders will begin immediately after the Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m. Funds raised will be used for cash awards for the competing departments and will go toward a scholarship fund for a current Knox County first responder pursuing higher education or additional training. The public is encouraged to show support for first responders by attending the event.

  • Various safety service-related displays will be available during the event.
  • Youth challenges, led by the YMCA, will be held in the afternoon, including Softball Throw (with a weighted ball), Broad Jump, Push-Ups (as many in one minute), Hill Run, Bear Crawl, Sack Race, Spoon/Egg Walk, and Hula Hoop.
  • FREE breakfast for first responders from Tim Horton's. Concessions will be available the duration of the event.
  • Lunch will be available for purchase from Trinity Baptist Church.
  • FREE concert that evening - Motown Sounds of Touch at 7:30 p.m. in the Schnormeier Event Center.

Online Registration:
You will need to register for each challenge separately. You can, however, register more than one team for the same challenge at one time. If you are registering one team for two challenges, the second challenge is just $25. Be sure to check this option when registering/paying.

Firefighter Stair Climb

14196092 1157967514242752 1652787818495540131 oThis competition will be comprised of a relay team in which all members will climb 140 feet on the Rastin Observation Tower. One at a time, each member will tackle 224 steps in a race to the top. This is a timed event and the team with the fastest time wins. Individual and department awards and prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4-person teams can be made up of any gender combination and must be an active career, part-time or volunteer firefighter.

Uniform of the day: Full turnout gear with SCBA harness/bottle. SCBA bottle must be greater than 4400 PSI. Firefighters will not be breathing air from bottle so a face-piece is not needed.

Note: All entries receive a free T-shirt.

$50 entry fee required. Please note that if your team registers for more than one challenge, the cost of your second challenge is just $25.

Firefighter Combat Challenge

Tasks include high-rise climb, forcible entry, hose advancement and victim rescue. This is a timed event. Each member will complete a task. It will be your responsibility to select who will do what. Individual and department awards and prizes will be awarded for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places.Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4-person teams can be made up of any gender combination and must be an active career, part-time or volunteer firefighter.

Tactical Obstacle Course

This is a team event, your 4-person team will be required to maneuver through, over, under or around several obstacles. Teamwork will be needed on multiple obstacles. This is a timed event and the fastest time wins. No firearms or tactical vests needed. Individual and department awards and prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4 sworn law enforcement officers

Uniform of the day: BDU/Tactical Pants, BDU/Tactical Blouse or matching T-shirts
acceptable, and boots (no tennis shoes)

Police Bicycle Challenge

This is an individual event where you will be required to maneuver through, over, under or around several obstacles. Individual and department awards & prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Location: Ariel Foundation Park (Mount Vernon, Ohio)

Entry: Individual

Uniform of the day and equipment: Department issued Bike Uniform, helmet, eye protection and a fully-equipped, good working police mountain bike (no motorized bikes).

 Ariel-Foundation Park, located in Mount Vernon, Ohio, is a 250-acre civic park that offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages.

Visiting Hours

Ariel-Foundation Park is officially open April 1 through November 15. Some areas of the park are accessible to pedestrians year-round. Daily hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are no admissions or parking fees. The Rastin Observation Tower, park museum, picnic pavillions, trails and other park features are free and open to the public. The Rastin Observation Tower is open during winter months, as long as weather allows.
