Challenges for first responders will begin at 9 a.m. Funds raised will be used for cash awards for the competing departments and will go toward a scholarship fund for a Knox County resident pursuing a career in safety service. The public will be encouraged to observe the challenges and show support for first responders.

Various safety service-related displays will be available during the morning and afternoon as well.

Youth and civilian challenges will be held in the afternoon beginning at noon. Civilian challenges include stair climb (4-person team) and fire truck pull (6-person team). Youth will have an opportunity to compete in various physical activities related to careers in safety service, including standing broad jump, terrace climb, pull ups, push ups, sit ups, and burpees. Members of the Mount Vernon Police Department will lead bike rides around the park so youth should bring their bikes and helmets!

Concessions will be available, including beer and wine. There will be a free concert that evening - Mowtown Sounds of Touch at 7:30 p.m. in the Schnormeier Event Center.

Firefighter Stair Climb

This competition will be comprised of a relay team in which all members will climb 140 feet on the Rastin Observation Tower. One at a time, each member will tackle 224 steps in a race to the top. This is a timed event and the team with the fastest time wins. Individual and department awards and prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4-person teams can be made up of any gender combination and must be
an active career, part-time or volunteer firefighter.

Uniform of the day: Full turnout gear with SCBA harness/bottle. SCBA bottle must
be greater than 4400 PSI. Firefighters will not be breathing air from bottle so a face-piece is not needed.

Note: All entries receive a free T-shirt.

Firefighter Combat Challenge

This competition will be comprised of a relay team completing multiple fire ground tasks. Tasks include high-rise climb, forcible entry, hose advancement and victim rescue. This is a timed event. Each member will complete a task. It will be your responsibility to select who will do what. Individual and department awards and prizes will be awarded for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places.Checks will be made payable
to your department association.

Team: 4-person teams can be made up of any gender combination and must be an active career, part-time or volunteer firefighter.

Tactical Obstacle Course

This event is to showcase your athletic ability. It is geared toward tactical teams but not limited to them. This is a team event, your 4-person team will be required to maneuver through, over, under or around several obstacles. Teamwork will be needed on multiple obstacles. This is a timed event and the fastest time wins. No firearms or tactical vests needed. Individual and department awards and prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Team: 4 sworn law enforcement officers

Uniform of the day: BDU/Tactical Pants, BDU/Tactical Blouse or matching T-shirts
acceptable, and boots (no tennis shoes)

Police Bicycle Challenge

This event is to showcase your police mountain bike skills. The course is based on IPMBA type training. This is an individual event where you will be required to
maneuver through, over, under or around several obstacles. Individual and department awards & prizes will be given for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. Checks will be made payable to your department association.

Location: Ariel Foundation Park (Mount Vernon, Ohio)

Entry: Individual

Uniform of the day and equipment: Department issued Bike Uniform, helmet, eye protection and a fully-equipped, good working police mountain bike (no motorized bikes).

 Ariel-Foundation Park, located in Mount Vernon, Ohio, is a 250-acre civic park that offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages.

Visiting Hours

Ariel-Foundation Park is officially open April 1 through November 15. Some areas of the park are accessible to pedestrians year-round. Daily hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are no admissions or parking fees. The Rastin Observation Tower, park museum, picnic pavillions, trails and other park features are free and open to the public. The Rastin Observation Tower is closed during winter months.
